What is a Femto Laser?
If you've browsed through even just a few pages on our website, you know that we value and emphasize patient safety and satisfaction in every aspect of our business. It's important for us to provide a 5-star experience to each patient and part of that experience is in delivering great visual results.
To consistently provide great experiences and great results, we invest heavily in the best technology available. One of the latest (and greatest) advances in laser vision correction procedures is All Laser LASIK. It differs from traditional LASIK in that the flap is created with a femtosecond laser (also called a femto laser), an infrared laser emitting ultra-fast cool laser pulses to create a precise flap that is smooth around the perimeter and uniform in thickness.
Microkeratome vs. Femto Laser
In traditional LASIK, the flap is created with a very fine mechanical blade called a microkeratome. LASIK with a microkeratome produces excellent results the vast majority of the time. However, in the rare instance where there is a serious LASIK complication, flap complications are very often to blame.
Femtosecond lasers greatly reduce the occurrence of flap-related complications because of the superior quality of the flap at creation. Femto lasers produce a smoother, more precise flap, faster healing and fewer incidences of post-operative night vision or glare problems. At the 20/20 Institute we utilize the Ziemer LDV femtosecond laser for all of our All Laser LASIK procedures.
All Laser LASIK
With All Laser LASIK, two lasers are used to complete the LASIK procedure. The first laser is the femtosecond laser and it creates the flap, exposing the underlying corneal tissue for vision correction treatment using the excimer laser.
The second laser, the Allegretto Wave Eye-Q excimer laser system, performs the actual vision correction by reshaping the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Currently the fastest laser on the market and the only laser built from the ground up on Wavefront technology, the Wave Eye-Q produces predictable and better results than most other excimer laser systems.
