Photo Refractive Keratectomy (PRK)

Some of our patients are candidates for PRK rather than LASIK. The 20/20 Institute surgeons are experienced in PRK and perform the procedure with the same VISX S4-IR™ laser used for LASIK.

PRK differs from LASIK in that no corneal flap is created. Instead, the PRK procedure starts by moving some of the corneal epithelium, (the top layer of cornea) out of the way. It then uses the same excimer laser to reshape a microscopic amount of corneal tissue below the surface, correcting the refractive error. The top layer of the cornea regrows over several days.

To enhance healing, you will wear a contact lens bandage for 2 to 3 days following the procedure, and will use prescription eye drops for several weeks to months to reduce inflammation and the risk of infection. Several follow-up visits are needed for PRK patients to ensure proper healing.

The Food and Drug Administration of the United States approved the excimer laser for PRK in 1995 for the purpose of correcting nearsightedness. Our doctors would be happy to discuss PRK and if and when it is the best option for your particular needs.

Monovision

The goal of monovision is to provide patients of "reading glasses age" (presbyopic) with good functional distance and near vision without being dependent on glasses for either distance or near vision. This technique is used for patients over 40 who require better unaided near vision. Some patients who use contact lenses to achieve monovision come to the 20/20 Institute seeking monovision through LASIK. LASIK can provide monovision for patients of the appropriate age.

What is monovision? It's a planned treatment to each eye for two different distances: one eye is treated to enable clear vision at close range, while the other eye is treated for clear distance vision. With most people, the brain learns to adapt to this way of seeing (usual adjustment time 1-3 weeks), so that it feels normal. Monovision is well accepted by most patients in the appropriate age range.
