LASIK Eye Surgery Doctors

Ophthalmologist-vs-Optometrist

Within any area of medical care, there are many specialties and sub-specialties and it’s no different in the world of vision and eye care in general. It can be confusing to know who does what and why you might need to see each type of specialist.

Optometrists

If you currently wear glasses and/or contacts, you probably have a yearly eye exam with an Optometrist. This type of eye doctor is licensed and qualified to examine, diagnose and treat disorders that affect your vision. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree, Optometrists attend four more years in graduate school to obtain their degree in Optometry. They are not M.D.s (medical doctors) but rather doctors of Optometry (O.D.).

Ophthalmologists

Ophthalmologists, on the other hand, are medical doctors. They attend undergraduate school, then four years of medical school, followed by a one-year internship and then up to three years in residency training for Ophthalmology. In addition, some go on to do a one- to two-year fellowship to study a sub-specialty. Not only do Ophthalmologists perform routine eye exams and prescribe lenses, but they are also trained as eye surgeons.

Within the ophthalmology specialty, there are sub-specialties and areas of care that some doctors may choose to focus on in their careers like cataract removal, neuro-ophthalmology or working with retina problems. At the 20/20 Institute, all of our LASIK surgeons are board-certified ophthalmologists with a specialty in vision correction surgery. They attend continuing education courses and national ophthalmology conventions to stay up-to-date with the latest procedures, methods and technology for laser vision correction surgery.
