Common LASIK Myths

Fact vs. Fiction

Many people fear the unknown. This is especially common among people who are considering LASIK surgery and do not know what to expect from the procedure. The good news is that advancements in LASIK vision correction technology have enabled millions of patients to achieve visual freedom through LASIK. Still, for some, certain fears could be enough to prevent them from seriously considering a laser vision correction surgery. At the 20/20 Institute in Colorado, Indiana and Oregon, thousands have been able to obtain a solid understanding of the LASIK eye surgery procedure, to overcome their fears and now enjoy a life without contacts and glasses.

Myth: LASIK is a painful procedure.

Fact: Many inquiring LASIK eye surgery patients are afraid they will experience pain since the procedure is performed while they are fully conscious. However, a mild sedative is given to patients to ensure that they remain comfortable, and numbing drops are applied to the eyes before the surgery begins. Although patients may feel some pressure, these steps help to make the LASIK process relatively pain free.

Myth: There is a lot of risk with having LASIK.

Fact: Another common fear is that patients think they may lose their vision after a LASIK procedure. For ideal candidates, LASIK is a very safe procedure. Determining your individual LASIK candidacy is an extremely important measure prior to proceeding with any laser vision correction surgery. In fact, the risk of any complications after a LASIK procedure is less than one half of 1 percent.

Myth: LASIK does not correct astigmatism.

Fact: With today's LASIK eye surgery technology, astigmatism is effectively treated by LASIK. There are some very rare, extremely high astigmatic patients beyond the ability of current technology, however that represents less than 1% of astigmatic patients. 20/20 Institute is committed to using only the most advanced FDA approved technology to provide you with the best possible visual results.

Myth: Having a LASIK procedure will require a long recovery time.

Fact: Following the LASIK procedure, patients can expect a short recovery period. Most patients are able to return to work and their daily activities the very next day following their procedure. There is usually little to no postoperative discomfort after the LASIK procedure and follow-up exams during recovery are requested to ensure that your eyes heal properly. The vast majority of patients can drive themselves to their 1-day follow-up appointment.

Myth: I am afraid I will not be able to keep my eyes perfectly still during the procedure.

Most patients are concerned that they may do something during their procedure that will adversely affect the visual outcome. The good news is that there are systems in place to ensure patients eye movements do not negatively affect the outcome of their procedures. Advanced tracking systems account for any eye movements a patient may have during a procedure. An instrument is also used to keep the eye open to prevent the patient from blinking during the procedure.

Myth: I have been told my eyes are too dry for LASIK.

True, dry eye is a concern for patients considering LASIK. However, advancements in dry eye treatment have made LASIK a reality for many dry eye patients.

Myth: My prescription is too high for LASIK.

Many advancements have occurred in LASIK eye surgery technology over the years, making the treatment range for LASIK very large. In fact, more than 94% of the population that require eyeglasses or contact lenses can have the most advanced form of LASIK treatment.
