What Are LASIK Enhancements?

A LASIK enhancement is a re-treatment on one or both eyes that have already received LASIK or another type of laser vision correction. It involves re-lifting the flap and having another laser treatment to correct a vision problem that was not fully corrected during the first treatment.

Your eye doctor will discuss your potential for 20/20 vision during your comprehensive evaluation.  After your procedure, you can discuss the potential for improved vision with LASIK enhancements.  Most patients are fully satisfied with their vision after LASIK and very few of them need or desire enhancements.

Who Needs a LASIK Enhancement?

You and your surgeon will discuss when and if enhancements are appropriate for you. Keep in mind that the percentage of patients requiring retreatment is very low but there are cases when it is necessary to have an enhancement procedure performed and those cases fall into three main categories:

1. Topographical abnormalities - decentrations, central islands, peninsulas
2. Spherical aberrations - causing night vision problems, halos, starburst, ghosting
3. Irregular astigmatism

Before and after your procedure, your 20/20 LASIK surgeon and his staff will go over the possible side effects of LASIK and what you can expect to see and feel immediately after surgery and in the coming weeks. If you experience any symptoms that are outside the bounds of what you've been told, please call us immediately. They may be benign or they could be signs of something serious developing.

Don't assume that because you feel your healing process isn't going like you thought it would that you will need an enhancement. Some symptoms like blurry vision glares, halos and dry eyes can be part of the normal healing process or be the results of minor swelling that can be easily managed with eye drops.
