Lasek Surgery - IntraLase Technology

in Denver, Colorado

The greatest promise of lasek surgery has always been that the use of computer-controlled lasers could make cuts and refinements in the cornea that could never be achieved by human hands.  This is the promise of Pentacam, a 3-D rotating camera that precisely measures all surfaces of the cornea.  This is also the promise of CustomVue WaveFront driven technology that utilizes a 3-D image of the cornea to precisely control the Star S4-IR Excimer Laser System to provide completely unique and completely accurate vision correction for each and every patient.

Until now, however, there had been one point in the process that was still manual and still used a blade.  At the beginning of the LASIK process, the surgeon used a microkeratome, a small, spatulate instrument, to create a flap in the cornea.  This flap is then folded back on its hinge to allow the Excimer laser to do its work precisely reshaping the corneal lens to provide vision correction.

IntraLase, by substituting a laser for the microkeratome blade, reduces risks associated with flap creation.  The procedure has been used in nearly 1 million LASIK procedures with no reports of serious sight-threatening complications.

Furthermore, the IntraLase procedure improves on the microkeratome LASIK procedure in a number of ways:

  • Speed—the IntraLase procedure can create a corneal flap in only 15 seconds.
  • Flexibility—the IntraLase procedure can be used to treat patients with higher refractive errors, thinner corneas, and even moderate-to-high astigmatism.
  • Biomechanical superiority—the IntraLase procedure creates flaps that are structurally superior and uniformly thin, making them preferable to microkeratome-created flaps.
  • Improved Corneal Wound Healing—because of the biomechanically superior nature of the IntraLase flaps, IntraLase LASIK patients heal faster, gaining more of their vision improvement more quickly that microkeratome LASIK patients.

The benefits for you are obvious:  a shorter procedure, a more customized procedure, less likelihood of complications, and quicker results.  Looking at all these factors, it is clear that IntraLase means a whole new generation of lasek surgery.
