LASEK
in Denver, Indianapolis and Portland
At some LASIK centers, "one size fits all" is the mantra and if the procedure and technology they offer doesn't fit you, then you're just out of luck. Not at 20/20 Institute. From your first point of contact with us until the end of your follow up care, you'll know that we are focused on you and your eye care needs. That's why, after careful research and study, we continually update our technology and our procedures. In addition to traditional LASIK, we also offer all laser LASIK, Epi-LASIK, PRK, and LASEK.
LASEK
LASEK, or Laser- Epithelial Keratomileusis, can be a great alternative for people who have been told they are not candidates for traditional LASIK. Like LASIK surgery, LASEK can correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. By comparison, LASEK is most like PRK in the family of laser vision correction procedures.
Step 1 - Your surgeon first puts anesthetic numbing drops in the eye. A tool called a trephine is used to define a section in the epithelium, the thin, outermost layer of the cornea. Next, an alcohol solution is used to loosen the edges of the epithelium. This section of epithelium is folded back to expose the surface for the laser treatment.
Step 2 - Your custom laser treatment reshapes the cornea to improve your vision. Just seconds go by and the treatment is complete.
Step 3 - The flap is gently placed over the treated surface and an oxygen-permeable bandage contact lens placed on the eye during the healing process and is typically removed in three to four days.
Your surgeon will give you post-operative instructions designed to help you get the best results possible. You will be asked to come back the next morning for a check-up, and on day 3 to 5 for the contact lens bandage to be removed. Over the next several months you will have a couple of appointments to make sure your vision is clear and healing is complete. It is important that you follow the post-operative instructions exactly and come to your follow up appointments.
Benefits of LASEK
Many people want to get rid of their glasses and contacts but have been told that they are not candidates for traditional LASIK because their corneas are too thin. In the past, these people could only receive treatment with PRK, but now LASEK gives them another option. Additional benefits of LASEK include:
- Flap is made in the epithelium, so the risk of corneal flap complications is removed
- Requires typically shorter recovery time than PRK
- Results are comparable to LASIK or PRK
- Is a viable alternative for some whose corneas are too thin or steep for LASIK
If you've been told in the past that LASIK was not an option for correcting your vision, please schedule a LASEK consultation with the 20/20 Institute today. We offer not just one, but several laser vision correction options. Schedule your free comprehensive evaluation today and find out if you're a candidate for LASEK.
