How to Choose a LASIK Surgeon
Whether you are located in Denver and Indianapolis, making the choice to have LASIK vision correction surgery is an exciting and life-changing one. At the 20/20 Institute we want your decision to be an informed one so we offer a no-obligation complimentary consultation for every patient. We'll answer all of your questions about LASIK and let you know whether or not you are a candidate. Take into account the following factors to ensure you select the perfect LASIK surgeon and center for you.
- Results. Ask the LASIK surgeon what percentage of his patients see 20/20 or better after LASIK. At the 20/20 Institute we offer LASIK Assurance*—if you are a good candidate for LASIK, which will be determined at your complimentary evaluation, and you don’t reach 20/20 vision -- it's Free! It's as simple as that! We also offer the 20/20 LASIK Commitment for Life – if at any time during your life you fall below 20/20 vision, LASIK retreatments (also known as enhancements) are free. Call or email us for more details.
- Reputation. Ask co-workers, friends, and family who've had LASIK where they went and what their experiences were like. Did they feel at ease with the staff, were the facilities clean and comfortable and most importantly, are they happy with their results? Don't be afraid to ask for email addresses or phone numbers of past patients so that you can discuss their experiences as well.
- Experience. Some circles of experts say that a LASIK surgeon should perform at least five hundred (500) procedures before being considered "experienced". Others say that number should be greater than one thousand (1,000). More important than how well the majority of the surgeon's procedures go is how well he can handle complications should they arise, even though those chances are very small.
- Center's main, but not only, focus should be LASIK. Vision correction surgery is not one-size-fits-all and LASIK should not be the only offering available to you. Many people are not candidates for LASIK but are candidates for other vision correction procedures like PRK. Your surgeon should be able to offer an alternative if LASIK eye surgery is not right for you.
- Price. Trying to save money when it comes to your vision is not a good idea. Your vision is precious and finding the lowest price may not ensure you the best outcome. There are some centers that promise a low fee but very few people qualify for those low, low prices. Rather than price, ask your center or practice if they offer third party financing that can make the procedure affordable through low monthly payments. Some even offer no interest and no payments for 12-24 months.
- Technology. It's important that your surgeon uses an FDA-approved laser and has the best equipment to treat your specific condition. The best surgeon cannot make a laser perform beyond its operating parameters. Of course this shouldn't be the only considering factor. Although a surgeon cannot make a laser overperform, an unskilled surgeon can certainly make it underperform.
Deciding to have LASIK is a big decision that takes careful consideration. While there are many, many factors to consider, choosing the right LASIK surgeon is the most important one you'll make.
