Can LASIK Get Me Out of
Reading Glasses?

in Denver, Indianapolis and Portland

During most of your life, the lens inside of your eye has the ability to change shape and power. This allows us to focus on objects close up through a process of lens power called “accommodation.” As we age, the natural lens becomes stiffer and loses the ability to change shape. This is termed Presbyopia, or the loss of accommodation. Presbyopia leads to the use reading glasses, bifocals, or other visual aids to facilitate up-close vision. LASIK cannot directly “fix” accommodation, but there are a variety of strategies that can address this situation and provide options for your near vision. One example is blended vision called monovision in which one eye is corrected for better distance vision and one eye is corrected for better vision close up.

At 20/20 Institute, our experienced Doctors will fit you with the best vision correction for your individual needs. Monovision may give those with a prescription for bifocals or progressive correction the best chance of delaying the need for corrective eyewear. The vast majority of 20/20 Institute guests who chose to proceed with monovision LASIK find it the most satisfying way to correct both near and far vision and improve their quality of life.
