Epi-LASIK (LASIK Surgery)

in Denver, Indianapolis and Portland

If you've been told that you are not a candidate for traditional LASIK surgery there's still hope that you can have laser vision correction. There are several newer techniques in the world of laser vision correction, like Epi-LASIK, that can help people to obtain clear, natural sight even if they do not qualify for LASIK.

What is Epi-LASIK?

Epi-LASIK is a combination of traditional LASIK and LASEK that strives to combine the benefits of each of those procedures. It is ideal for patients who do not qualify for LASIK because of thin corneas or corneas that are too steep (very high myopia).

With Epi-LASIK, a flap is created before the laser treatments, but unlike LASIK, it is created in the epithelium (outermost part of the cornea) not in the cornea itself. A tool called an epikeratome separates the epithelium from the cornea and then it is gently laid back, exposing the surface that will receive the laser treatment. And unlike LASEK, no alcohol solution is used to loosen the epithelium, which can cause damage to the epithelial cells.

After the laser treatment is finished, a bandage contact lens is placed over the eye for three to fours days to allow the epithelium to heal. This special contact lens is oxygen-permeable, meaning that oxygen can flow through the lens and aid in the healing process. Though you will probably notice an immediate difference in your sight, your final visual outcome can take up to one month or longer to stabilize.

Benefits of Epi-LASIK

For those who thought they would be bound to their glasses or contacts forever because their corneas were too thin to undergo LASIK surgery, Epi-LASIK is a dream come true. Although there is a significantly longer healing time with Epi-LASIK, the final results are comparable to LASIK, PRK or LASEK outcomes. Epi-LASIK is associated with less post-operative discomfort than PRK or LASEK and any discomfort that is present is usually easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications. Another plus of Epi-LASIK is that it seems to cause fewer incidences of dry eyes post-surgery than traditional LASIK.
