LASIK Eye Surgery Complications
Dry Eyes
One of the most common (and easily managed) side effects of LASIK surgery is a condition called Dry Eyes. Every LASIK patient should expect to experience at least some degree of dry eyes post-operatively. Some people may have it for just a week or two while others may have symptoms for several months or more.
What Causes Dry Eyes
During LASIK surgery, the creation of the flap causes temporary corneal nerve damage. Specifically, it causes damage to the nerves that send signals to your tear ducts to produce tears. It's important to follow your doctor's post-operative instructions regarding the use of your prescription eye drops and your artificial tears.
If the artificial tears aren't enough to alleviate the dry, scratchy feelings in your eyes, ask your LASIK surgeon about the following solutions and if they are right for you.
- Cold compresses
- Using a humidifier in your bedroom at night and work space during the day
- Prescription tears (in addition to the over the counter tears)
- Punctal plugs (inserted into your tear ducts by your doctor to help the eye retain moisture)
- Using supplements like Flax seed oil capsules
- Making sure your fluid intake is adequate
People who haven't had LASIK vision correction can also experience Dry Eyes. Some other causes include:
- Aging
- Hormonal changes
- Dry or windy climate
- Certain medications
- Excessive amounts of time in front of TV or computer screens
- Inadequate sleep
- Vitamin A deficiency
- Fumes from cigarette smoke
If you already suffer from dry eyes, be sure to mention this to your 20/20 Eye Doctor during your consultation.
Why Artificial Tears Are so Important
The first thing to know about artificial tears is that they are no substitute for your body's natural tears. Second, there are some tears that you should be careful not to overuse. Eye drops with the preservative benzalkonium (BAK) can lead to eye irritation if used too long. In addition, decongestant eye drops (those with ingredients to reduce red eyes) should only be used for a short time. If used too long, they can lead to dependence and actually cause dryness and irritation.
When used properly, though, artificial tears are completely safe and your 20/20 LASIK surgeon will encourage you to use them for as often and as long as you need them after your LASIK eye surgery.
Artificial tears mirror the many benefits of your eyes' own natural tears. In addition to rewetting the eye surface they also:
- Wash away dust
- Soothe the eyes
- Provide oxygen to the cornea
- Provide nutrients to the cornea
- Defend the eyes against microorganisms
Whatever the severity of your dry eyes may be, make sure that you are in regular communication with your LASIK doctor, especially if your symptoms change or worsen as this could be an indicator of another condition or problem.
