LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure which reshapes the cornea to improve vision. It's a type of refractive surgery, meaning that it changes the way light is refracted (bent) as it enters and travels through the eye.

The Procedure

You recline in a chair while anesthetic drops numb the eye. The eyelids are held open gently with a special instrument to prevent any blinking. The surgeon creates a small flap on the surface of the cornea, to expose the tissue below. Then the laser can quickly recontour that corneal tissue according the individual plan previously created for you by the doctor using the computerized data obtained from the Wavefront device.

When laser reshaping is finished, your Laser eye surgeon will reposition the flap and with no stitches it will heal itself, acting as a little bandage over the treated area. Most patients report little to no discomfort.

Customarily patients get 90% of the vision correction overnight and most patients can return to work the next day. The remaining (usually 10%) of healing takes approximately 2-3 weeks.
